Vaishno Devi Yatra
The Vaishno Devi shrine, set in the Trikuta Mountains near Katra, is one of India's most-visited pilgrimage sites. The yatra itself is a roughly 12-13 km trek (or pony/palki ride) from the base at Katra up to the shrine.
At 2-3 days, it's a manageable trip from Punjab and works well either as a standalone pilgrimage or paired with a stop in Jammu.

What to Know Before You Go
- A Yatra Registration Slip is required and can be obtained online in advance or at the counters in Katra.
- The trek from Katra to the shrine can be done on foot, by pony, by palki (palanquin), or by helicopter for part of the route.
- Summer (April–June) and the Navratri periods see the highest footfall — expect longer waits during these times.
- Warm clothing is worth packing even outside winter, as temperatures drop noticeably at higher points on the trek.

Best Time to Visit
The yatra runs year-round, making it one of the most flexible trips on this list. Winter (December–February) is cooler and less crowded; summer (April–June) and Navratri periods see the heaviest footfall. Spring and autumn tend to offer a good balance of comfortable weather and manageable crowds.
