Shimla & Manali Hill Escape

A traveler's guide — what to know, when to go, and how the route works.

Shimla & Manali Hill Escape

Shimla and Manali are the classic North India hill-station pairing — one a former colonial summer capital with pine-covered ridges, the other a mountain town that's the gateway to Himachal's high passes. Together they make an easy 5-6 day loop from Chandigarh.

Unlike the higher-altitude circuits further north, this route stays open year-round, which is part of why it's so popular — you can time it for snow, spring greenery, or clear autumn skies depending on what you're after.

Best Time to Visit

This is one of the few Himalayan routes that genuinely works year-round. Winter (December–February) brings snow and a different kind of scenery, but roads can be slower. Spring (March–June) is warm and green. Autumn (September–November) has the clearest skies and is often considered the sweet spot for photography and comfortable driving conditions.
