Spiti Valley Expedition
A traveler's guide — what to know, when to go, and how the route works.
Spiti Valley Expedition
Spiti is a cold desert valley in the high Himalayas — dramatic, remote, and genuinely different from Himachal's greener hill stations. Monasteries, turquoise lakes, and villages above 13,000 feet make this one of the most striking drives in North India.
It's also one of the more demanding routes on this list — an 8-9 day trip with long driving days and real altitude to account for, only accessible for about five months a year.
Dates and availability can change. Road conditions, weather, and seasonal closures may affect this route — contact us for the latest information before you travel.
What to Know Before You Go
- Roads into Spiti are typically only open from May to October — check current conditions before planning, as opening dates shift year to year.
- Altitude sickness is a real consideration above 12,000 feet — build in acclimatization time rather than rushing the ascent.
- Fuel stations are sparse once you're in the valley — plan refueling stops carefully.
- Mobile network coverage is limited or absent in much of Spiti — let people know you'll be out of touch.

Best Time to Visit
Spiti's access roads are typically open from May to October, though exact dates shift year to year depending on snowmelt and road maintenance. June through September has the most reliable conditions; May and October can still have snow at higher points, so it's worth checking current road status before finalizing dates.
